Beef Facility
Training the next generation of cattle handlers
Ohio State ATI’s beef cattle handling facility is one of a kind in Ohio. Designed by renowned animal behaviorist Temple Grandin, it gives students hands-on experience with handling methods that are both humane and efficient.
The facility features a corral, sorting pens and a dual chute system with a hydraulic squeeze chute and breeding box — everything students need to work cattle safely and effectively. Grandin’s signature design uses curved chutes and a round crowd pen that guide cattle in a natural flow, reducing stress and improving handling.
The herd includes crossbred and registered Angus cattle as well as nationally recognized Murray Grey cattle. Students work with brood cows, replacement heifers and bulls throughout the year.
From day one, students are involved in daily herd care. They build real-world skills in feedlot management, calving, branding, artificial insemination, hoof trimming, vaccinating and dehorning — gaining the confidence and experience to step straight into the industry.
