STEP into a support system for your second year
The Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) is a unique university-wide program for Ohio State students to explore personal interests, build strong connections and take part in a meaningful experience during their second year at Ohio State ATI. Through STEP, you’ll work closely with a faculty mentor and a small group of peers while preparing for a hands-on project that reflects your goals, interests and future plans.
What is STEP?
STEP is a two-semester program designed specifically for second-year students. During the fall semester, STEP focuses on community building, self-reflection and goal setting. You’ll meet regularly with a small cohort of students and a faculty mentor to explore identity, values, and personal growth.
During the spring semester, your faculty mentor will guide you through the process of developing a proposal for a STEP Signature Project. This project is supported through a STEP fellowship and is designed around your personal, academic or career interests.
Participating in STEP can help you grow, explore and take ownership of your Ohio State experience.
Who is eligible?
You are eligible to participate in STEP if you:
- spent one year in college at Ohio State ATI or another institution
- one year of college credit hours accumulated (excluding hours earned in high school)
Participation is subject to meeting program requirements and having your STEP project proposal approved.
Why participate in STEP?
Students who participate in STEP often describe it as one of the most impactful parts of their Ohio State experience.
Through STEP, you can:
- Build a meaningful relationship with a faculty mentor
- Connect with other second-year students in a supportive cohort
- Explore personal, academic, and career goals
- Strengthen communication and networking skills
- Gain confidence by trying something new
- Make your education more personal and intentional
STEP Signature Projects and funding
A STEP Signature Project is a self-designed, experiential learning opportunity that supports students' personal and professional growth. Students who complete STEP may receive up to $2,000 to support a STEP Signature Project.
Signature Projects fall into one of six approved areas and may include experiences such as:
- Creative and Artistic Endeavor
- Education Abroad
- Internship
- Leadership
- Service-Learning
- Undergraduate Research
Your project is designed around your interests, whether that involves travel, creative work, professional exploration or something entirely new.
