J.M. Smucker Company

When the J.M. Smucker Company announced its decision to build a new, state- of-the-art manufacturing plant at its Orrville, OH headquarters, the gears started turning in Dave Fazekas’ mind.  As the Progressive Maintenance Leader at Smucker’s, he knew that the move to the new plant also meant a move toward Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).  As part of TPM, machine operators are trained to perform many of the day-to-day tasks of simple maintenance and troubleshooting to keep machines operating as scheduled.  Many of their production employees would have to be trained to perform these tasks.

Smucker’s had the technical expertise to teach employees what they needed to know, but didn’t have the time or curriculum design background to develop training content, create instructional manuals, presentations, etc.  So they came to us for help.  Working with their technical experts on the given topic –in this case, Pumps and Gear Boxes - our team took their knowledge and translated it into training modules for their own in-house trainers to deliver.

“Building the course was a true team effort,” says Fazekas.  “OSU and Smucker’s worked together, exchanging ideas throughout the course build to create a finished product that offered current, relevant technical training information.  As one of Smucker’s in-house trainers for the project, I felt very comfortable with this team approach --  I felt attached to the content while the work was progressing as opposed to waiting for a final product and wondering what was in it.”
