Horse Science
Download Fact Sheet (PDF)
Horse science majors pursue an Associate of Science degree which allows them to gain hands-on experience prior to enrolling in a Bachelor of Science degree program at The Ohio State University. The program enables students to complete approximately 50 percent of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences or in another agricultural program with an equine minor.
Technical instruction includes course work in horse management; judging, fitting and showing; farrier science; horse health and diseases; feeding and nutrition; equine breeding and genetics; equitation, breaking and training; and business management principles.
Practicum is required of students in horse science. This is a supervised, practical work experience that provides students with the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classrooms and at the Ohio State ATI horse facilities. Students are encouraged to think independently and evaluate and solve problems under the guidance of the horse facilities manager. Students assist in the daily husbandry and responsibilities of the horses.
Career Prospects
After students complete a bachelor's degree within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University, their career opportunities will vary depending upon their major.
