Horse Production and Management

Horse production and management is an Associate of Applied Science degree that concentrates on nutrition, reproduction, selection, training, health, and management. The practical aspects of horse production, training, and management are emphasized at Ohio State ATI’s horse facilities.

Technical instruction includes horse management; judging, fitting, and showing; farrier science; horse health and diseases; feeding and nutrition of horses; equine breeding and genetics; balanced-seat horsemanship and equitation; horse facilities management; and practical horse handling.

Internships
Students in the horse production and management program complete an industry internship of full-time employment. Ohio State ATI encourages students to find appropriate internship positions in the U.S. and abroad.

Practicum is required of all equine students. This is a supervised, practical work experience at the Ohio State ATI horse facilities. Students are encouraged to think independently and evaluate and solve problems under the guidance of the horse facilities manager. Students assist in the daily husbandry and responsibilities of the horses.

Career Prospects
Career opportunities in the equine industry are available in sales, service, production, management, and supervision. Graduates receiving an Associate of Applied Science degree could fill positions such as:
• Stallion manager
• Riding instructor
• Horse show judge
• Sales representative
• Farm manager
• Broodmare manager
• Horse trainer
• Nutrition technician

Facilities
The Ohio State ATI Equine Center is a riding, training, and breeding facility that includes:
• A 46-stall barn
• A 100’ x 200’ indoor and a 120’ x 400’ outdoor arena
• 80 acres of pasture
• A breeding shed
• A breeding laboratory
